Ecosystem orchestration gains interest in Finnish business weekly

Thursday, February 26, 2009

The software industry faced a serious downturn in the beginning of 2000s. F –Secure, providing internet security services, managed to come out from the Internet crisis stronger than most other software companies.

Dr. Johan Wallin, managing partner of Synocus Group and Tomi Laamanen, Professor of Strategic Management at the Helsinki University of Technology have conducted an in-depth study of how different Internet security firms behaved during the crisis. Crisis management and orchestration

Monday, January 12, 2009

Synocus initiated in 2002 a research project together with Helsinki University of Technology on the handling of the Internet crisis. Three Finnish companies in the internet security industry were analyzed in depth until the end of 2006. This analysis revealed that one of them, F-Secure, came out of the crisis stronger than the other two. The analysis of how this happened shows that F-Secure was successful in orchestrating its own ecosystem. F-Secure developed unique capabilities for how to collaborate with its partners. The research resulted in a scientific article, Cognitive Dynamics of Capability Development Paths, co-authored by Professor Tomi Laamanen and Johan Wallin. This article has now been accepted for publication in Europe’s most prestigious management journal, Journal of Management Studies.

Emergent clusters will not be enough. Strong orchestrators are needed to speed up the development and create new concepts and business models that are adapted to today’s challenging world. Organizations and companies that are able to adapt this new way of thinking and actively shape their own future will be the ones that will survive and prosper.
